In short: on a Tudor Black Bay, the first marks appear on the clasp, on the outer links of the “riveted” bracelet and on the case flanks. Unlike recent Rolex models, most Black Bays have an aluminium bezel insert: it develops a patina and can mark over time. The right kit depends on the case size, which varies a lot from one Black Bay to another: 37, 39 or 41 mm.
What makes the Black Bay special
1. The riveted bracelet
The Black Bay bracelet echoes the style of Tudor bracelets from the 1950s, with visible rivets on the outer links. These links, with their edges and rivet heads, are the first to rub against the desk and other surfaces.
2. The aluminium bezel insert
Most Black Bay divers (Black Bay, 58, 54, 58 GMT) have an anodised aluminium bezel insert. It is part of the model's vintage charm, but it is less scratch-resistant than a ceramic insert.
3. The T-fit clasp
On recent models such as the Black Bay 54 and the Black Bay 58 GMT, the T-fit clasp lets you adjust the bracelet length without tools. As on any watch worn at the office, its cover is the area that rubs most.
Model by model
Black Bay 54 (37 mm)
The smallest Black Bay diver, launched in 2023, with a T-fit clasp and solid end links. Its compact size means it is often worn every day, even with smarter clothes. See the Black Bay 54 kit
Black Bay 58 (39 mm)
The 39 mm Black Bay, inspired by Tudor's 1958 dive watches, with an aluminium bezel insert. See the Black Bay 58 kit
Black Bay 58 GMT (39 mm, 2024)
The GMT version of the 58, with a bidirectional 24-hour bezel and a black and burgundy aluminium insert, on a riveted bracelet with T-fit clasp. As on any GMT, the bezel is often turned when travelling: the steel around it wears faster. See the Black Bay 58 GMT kit
Black Bay (41 mm)
The original model, in 41 mm. Its wider case has more exposed flanks. See the Black Bay kit
Black Bay Chrono
The chronograph of the family, with pushers on either side of the crown. These pushers and the right flank of the case are handled often and take the rubbing. We offer three kits depending on the version: Black Bay Chrono, Black Bay Chrono 2024 and Black Bay Chrono 39.
Black Bay 54, 58 or 41: how to tell?
The warranty card shows the reference. Without papers, measure the case diameter without the crown: about 37 mm for the 54, 39 mm for the 58, 41 mm for the original Black Bay. If in doubt, send us a photo.
Protecting a Black Bay without polishing it
Repolishing a Black Bay removes metal and softens the edges of its case and riveted links, which make up much of its character. A PreserveLayer™ film cut for your model freezes their current condition: case, crystal, lugs and clasp with the Essential kit, plus the riveted bracelet with the Premium kit.
Frequently asked questions about the Black Bay
Does the aluminium bezel of a Black Bay scratch?
It is less resistant than a ceramic bezel: over time, it can mark and develop a patina. All the more reason to avoid unnecessary knocks.
Do the Black Bay 54 and the Black Bay 58 use the same kit?
No. Their cases are not the same size (37 mm versus 39 mm): each kit is cut for its model.
My Black Bay is on a fabric or leather strap: which kit should I choose?
The Essential kit protects the case, crystal, lugs and clasp. The Premium kit adds the metal bracelet: it is only useful if you wear your Black Bay on its riveted bracelet.
